Kate Wills Posted 23 September , 2005 Share Posted 23 September , 2005 Private EDWIN READ L/6390, 2nd Bn., Royal Sussex Regiment died on 31 October 1914, and is commemorated on the Menin Gate. He was a reservist who was recalled to the Colours in 1914. What is the significance of the L prefix? Would 6390 have been his pre-war number? westkent78 Posted 23 September , 2005 Share Posted 23 September , 2005 Hello Kate, Unless I'm mistaken, L is an indication of a home counties pre war regular as you guessed. It's quite likely that 6390 would be his pre war number, and with such a relatively low number he may have even seen service in the Boer War. Can't remember exactly when the prefix was added to the numbers. Best Regards, Matthew
Paul Johnson Posted 23 September , 2005 Share Posted 23 September , 2005 Kate, I'm not sure if this is of any help but I posted a query about an L number recently. Heres a link to it. L Number It may help. Regards PAUL J
Paul Reed Posted 23 September , 2005 Share Posted 23 September , 2005 The L prefix indicates that he was a regular army soldier. The number shows he enlisted in the regiment in March 1901 (a soldier with the No 6385 enlisted on 1.03.01). Hope that helps.
