Remembered Today:

Private Peaceful

This is a childrens book ... but it tells the tale of the last day of Private Peaceful who is to be shot at dawn...

The chapters trace his life and the chapter titles are the time of night as his last day approaches.

It is for kids and a good read.. maybe worth a look

John,

I read the book some time ago. Yes it is aimed at children but I really enjoyed it. It is worth reading, as basic story line but gives some insight into being a tommy and going overseas. We are going to see the stage production next month

regards

There is a touring production of a play based on the book doing the rounds at the moment. I am taking a group of pupils to see it at the Lowry in November.

And if I remember rightly, there is a private peaceful buried somewhere in the Ypres area, that gave the author his idea.

I meant to have a look when I was over there last month, but totally forgot (its the age you know).

Ian.

Quite enjoyed the book, but not as impressed as others seem to be. Felt it a bit more a sort of gritty social drama than a war story. Not that I, necessarily, have anything against gritty social dramas.

My 13 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed and we are working on her WW1 project now :)

Funnily enough it was working on a school project with my eldest daughter a few years ago that really triggered off my obsession with WW1
