john w. Posted 15 September , 2005 Share Posted 15 September , 2005 This is a childrens book ... but it tells the tale of the last day of Private Peaceful who is to be shot at dawn... The chapters trace his life and the chapter titles are the time of night as his last day approaches. It is for kids and a good read.. maybe worth a look John
BRIAN TALMER Posted 15 September , 2005 Share Posted 15 September , 2005 John, I read the book some time ago. Yes it is aimed at children but I really enjoyed it. It is worth reading, as basic story line but gives some insight into being a tommy and going overseas. We are going to see the stage production next month regards Lesley
Mark Hone Posted 16 September , 2005 Share Posted 16 September , 2005 There is a touring production of a play based on the book doing the rounds at the moment. I am taking a group of pupils to see it at the Lowry in November.

Dawson Posted 17 September , 2005 Share Posted 17 September , 2005 And if I remember rightly, there is a private peaceful buried somewhere in the Ypres area, that gave the author his idea. I meant to have a look when I was over there last month, but totally forgot (its the age you know). Ian.

john w. Posted 11 October , 2005 Author Share Posted 11 October , 2005 Have finished the book... a while ago now, but feel that it should be read by all children.. such a good read John
Guest Simon Bull Posted 11 October , 2005 Share Posted 11 October , 2005 Quite enjoyed the book, but not as impressed as others seem to be. Felt it a bit more a sort of gritty social drama than a war story. Not that I, necessarily, have anything against gritty social dramas.
tamos123 Posted 19 October , 2005 Share Posted 19 October , 2005 My 13 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed and we are working on her WW1 project now Funnily enough it was working on a school project with my eldest daughter a few years ago that really triggered off my obsession with WW1 Tamos
Guest belgiumpoppies Posted 28 October , 2005 Share Posted 28 October , 2005 I've read the book - even though its for children. I bought it because it had a WW1 theme. I found it very moving.
