tombowcock Posted 15 September , 2005 Share Posted 15 September , 2005 Hi, I've been trying to find out more details about 2nd Lt Edwin John Brinkworth. He was in the 15th Btn Durham Light Infantry (see my post 15 DLI in Units section). According to SDGW he died of wounds on 9/9/18. There is no service number attributed to him on either SDGW or the CWGC sites. I can also not find any medal roll for him. Was it usual that medals were not awarded if the person died on active service ? Also I've tried searching the London Gazette for his commission but can't find it (though I must say I find it difficult searching the LG) if any experts can find it I would be grateful. I would be really glad of any assistance from the "Old Sweats" ! Cheers James
Stebie9173 Posted 15 September , 2005 Share Posted 15 September , 2005 Could this be your man? Brinkworth, Edward John 26th Royal Fusiliers GS/20005 Private Durham Light Infantry Second Lieutenant http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...1&resultcount=1 Bankers and accountants battalion it seems... Officers did not have a number, by the way. Therefore not listed on CWGC unless it gives details of prior unit before commission. Steve.
linge Posted 15 September , 2005 Share Posted 15 September , 2005 James He was born in 1891 Chippenham, Wiltshire the son of William H and Charlotte A Brinkworth. Before the war he worked for Lloyds at Threadneedle Street. There is a photograph of him in Lloyds Bank Limited Memorial Album. If you want a copy of the photo send me an email and I'll scan a copy for you. Regards Pam

Steve. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I guess that it could be him....although all records I have including our local church record has him as Edwin. I guess that it could be a typo ? Stebie9173 Posted 15 September , 2005 Share Posted 15 September , 2005 Pam's reference may clear up the discrepancy. e-mail her for the scan and we'll have another look if everything doesn't match up... Steve.
tombowcock Posted 15 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 15 September , 2005 Hi Pam, Yes its definetly him. The record card shows he died of wounds on the 9/9/18 and underneath his name is an asterix and an amendment to Edwin.. So the two tally. Do you know what the references on the card mean ? ie NW/5/24273 also mentio of another roll ref TP/?10/B/79 Once again very many thanks for your help. Cheers James
Stebie9173 Posted 15 September , 2005 Share Posted 15 September , 2005 These are references to the Medal Rolls books which are at the National Archives at Kew. These generally contain a little more detail than the Medal Index Card. They often give the battalion number of men where the MIC often does not. They will probably not add much (or anything) to what you now know. Always worth a look however, if you can. The VM/BWM roll often has one reference and the "Star" Rolls another. Did he qualify for a 1914 or 1914-15 Star? The other thing that can be checked at the NA is his Service Record, which as an officer means it is likely to have survived the years. Steve. tombowcock Posted 15 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 15 September , 2005 Hi Pam, Not sure if you got my mail or not....theres nothing to say wether the post has gone or not ! YES ... I would be very grateful for a copy of Edwin Brinkworths picture from the Lloyds Bank Album. Does it only include officers or those who worked in London ? I have two others who worked for Lloyds and who died in the GW. They are Simeon Rowe & John Kingsland. I have enclosed a photo of the Rememberance Plaque in our Church which is Tabernacle URC - Chippenham, Wilts. Once again I am heavily indebted to the members of this forum. All the best James
