Kath Posted 14 September , 2005 Share Posted 14 September , 2005 I can find nothing on the Almorah - anyone got access to Lloyd's Reg. 1914 back? Kath.
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 14 September , 2005 Share Posted 14 September , 2005 Kath This may be your ship - note no 'H' in the name. SS ALMORA 4385 Tonnes built 1899 for Donaldson Lines. Sold to Houlden Middleton & Co (London) in 1916. Sunk by U39 (commanded by Walter Forstmann) in 1917 in Straits of Gibraltar. Dave
Kath Posted 14 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 14 September , 2005 Thanks, Dave. More than likely. Not the first time ship names mis-spelled by this Writer. Another one - Niwara - is, following your lead, Nirvana. Kath.
historydavid Posted 15 September , 2005 Share Posted 15 September , 2005 Kath, Almora, built 1899, 4,385 grt, sunk 2 Oct1917 by U 39, 100m W½N from Cape Spartel, Atlantic, no losses, cargo coal, owner Houlder, Middleton & Co Ltd-London, route Barry to Gibraltar. No Nirwara or Nirvana listed as sunk but there was a Nirpura, see below Nirpura, built 1916, 7,640 grt, sunk 16 April 1918 by U 155, 110m WNW (true) from Cape da Roca, Atlantic, no losses, cargo Peas & lentils, owner British India Steam Navigation Co Ltd-London, route Bombay & Karachi to London. Both vessels were torpedoed. Hope this helps, best wishes David
historydavid Posted 15 September , 2005 Share Posted 15 September , 2005 Should have added that the info comes from Tennent - "British Merchant Ships sunk by U-boats in the 1914-1918 War" The U-boat refs and locations are confirmed by ub.net. Best wishes David ps maybe Dave has a 'dodgy' author as well.
