I am trying to find out how Ernest Stringer, Cpl 9597 2nd Bn Northamptonshire Regt, won his Military Medal.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Andy

Difficult task.

To start with there are no citations published for MMs.

However, we can narrow down the time it was won to approx. mid-1916 by the date the MM was announced in the London Gazette.

This is his entry:

London Gazette 23-8-1916 (Published 22-8-1916)

9597 L./C. E. Stringer, North'n R.

http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveVi...&selHonourType=

From that date it would have been awarded some time between March and July 1916, though May 1916 is probable as most averaged about 3 months delay from action to announcement.

Your next port of call will be either the War Diary of the 2nd Northants or the local newspapers of the time from where he lived. May I ask where he is from? If he is a man local to Peterborough, I'll keep an eye out for him in the local papers.

I hope this helps,

Steve.

PS You might also want to keep an eye out for:

7188 Coy. Q./M. Sjt. A. Stewart, North'n R.

whose number suggest that he is either 1st or 2nd Battalion, too.

One other man in that Gazette, Pte L Fynn of the 2nd Bedfords, I am 90% sure won an MM on 25th June 1916 if that is any help.

Steve.
