Can anyone please give further info on this aircraft. It is numbered 4283.

Many thanks.

Jamie is certainly correct; the machine is an FE 2b; 4283 was built under contract by G & J Weir in batch 4256-4291.

Do you have any idea about when and where the photograph was taken? It looks like the aeroplane is on display.

Further to my earlier post, I think there's a chance that 4283 may have served with No 22 Sqn RFC, as other aircraft from the same production batch, viz 4278, 4285, 4286, 4288, 4289 and 4291, at least, were used by No 22. Aircraft weren't always allocated to units in sequential order, but sometimes some machines were.

Unfortunately, the history of No 22 Sqn RFC/RAF that I have, Capt W F J Harvey's Pi in the Sky, doesn't list aircraft serial numbers. These things are sent to try us.

Regards

Gareth

Thanks for your replies, I have nothing further at all. On the original it is possible to see that there is a group of schoolchildren sitting in the background. I suspect it was a visit to a school, maybe by an old boy.

Thanks for the input.

John.
