Major General Boyd

I was surprised to come across this photo of Maj Gen Boyd (GOC 46 Div) with a DCM (and wound stripe). Now, I know it`s probably not unique, but it must be unusual for a Maj Gen to sport a DCM. Anyone know anything about him, or other generals with OR`s decorations? Phil B

According to his entry in "Who's Who", Gerald Farrell Boyd (b. 19.11.77) joined the Devons in 1895, Sergeant 1899, 2nd Lt East Yorks, 1900, Captain Leinster Regt 1902, Major Royal irish 1915. CMG 1918 and CB in 1919. I suspect his DCM was awarded for service in S Africa (as was his DSO). Quite a character.

Another General with a DCM was A J McCulloch, DSO**, who commanded 64 Bde, 21st Divn, for a spell in mid-1918: he also won a DCM in S Africa.

Maj.Gen. Frank Worthington, considered the father of the Canadian Armoured Corps, earned a CB in World War Two, but in 1914-18 was very much the fighting soldier, as a lieutenant (acting captain) he was sporting the MC and bar and the MM and bar.
