L.H.Lewes

Hello,

I would appreciate very much any kind of assistance regarding a soldier named L.H.Lewes. I have no information regarding his rank or his regiment. His name is written on a small piece of paper with a hand-made cartoon designed on Nov.4, 1916 (probably by him). This cartoon shows a smiling wounded soldier. On the paper is also wriitten: "Saved from Britannic wreck on November 20, 1916". The latter is written with a different handwriting.

I am assuming that he was one of the wounded evacuated to England from Lemnos (Moudros) on the White Star liner and he made this cartoon as a gift to a nurse or a medical orderly of the ship who survived the sinking (and added the above mentioned note on the paper).

Thanks in advance for your time.

Best regards,

Michail

Is the H possibly an M as there is a VAD named Lilian M. Lewes listed in the mics ?

Hi Myrtle,

Thanks for your reply!

You are right. I've checked the page again and the "H" is actually an "M". Any info about this VAD?

Best regards,

Michail

You may find more on the medal index card if you download it. There is a Lilian Lewes 10 years old on the 1901 census who was born and lived in Bournemouth, Hampshire.

Hi Myrtle,

I've downloaded the medal index card but there is no significant info. However, I took the chance to search for other people who had served on the ship and there were some good findings.

Many thanks once again.

Thank you for posting the drawing. The date in the lower right hand corner, 4th November 1916 would have been when HMHS Brittanic was on its 5th voyage to Naples, Mudros and back. This seems to indicate that the injured man would have been delivered to Southampton before the ship went on its final voyage.

Excellent website by the way.
