Hedley Malloch Posted 8 September , 2005 Share Posted 8 September , 2005 Is there a source - written or otherwise - which gives the compostion of brigades and divisions by batallion and date throughout WW1? That is a source one could consult to find the batallions which made up the y brigade in x division on 23 June 1916. Many thanks
Chris_Baker Posted 8 September , 2005 Share Posted 8 September , 2005 Hedley How about The Long, Long Trail. Every brigade in every Division is there. Click on Army (tab towards top of index page) and choose your Division.
Graham Stewart Posted 8 September , 2005 Share Posted 8 September , 2005 Hedley, For personal use perhaps the most detailed is the "Order of Battle of Divisions" by Major A.F.Becke, which is based on official documents and covers 5 volumes which were reprinted by Ray Westlake in the 1980's. Part 1 - The Regular British Divisions. Part 2a - The T.F. Mounted Divisions & 1st Line T.F. Divisions. Part 2b - The 2nd Line T.F. Divisions, The Home Service Divisions, 74th & 75th Divisions. Part 3a - The New Army Divisions. Part 4 - The Army Council, G.H.Q's, Armies & Corps. Further volumes were added in 1991 with F.W.Perry's Part 5a - The Divisions of Australia, Canada & New Zealand and those in East Africa. Part 5b - The Indian Army Divisions. The IWM also added a further volume in 1989;- "Order of Battle of the British Armies in France November 1918". To compliment Brig. E.A.James "British Infantry Regiments 1914-18" you have the little known "The Gurkha Brigade in the Great War 1914-1920", printed by the Gurkha Museum in 1991. Nearly all of these were limited publications at the time and eagerly snapped up, but copies may still be available through specialist book sellers. Graham.
