delta Posted 6 September , 2005 Share Posted 6 September , 2005 Being a sad lad, my other hobby is trying to produce a family tree. Whilst clearing out my mother-in laws loft, I obtained a wedding photo, dated around 1918, with (on the mount board) six who must have died or were absent from the wedding. One is a nurse, one a boy scout, one a Gunner (RA), one an officer in the ASC, one a child (ina sailor outfir) and one, in a uniform I dont recognise The tunic has a most unusual fastening - can anyone help identify his unit. Paul Johnson Posted 7 September , 2005 Share Posted 7 September , 2005 Stephen, It looks to me as though it could be Royal Flying Corps or US Army. Would this fit in with anything you know? I'm not an expert on uniforms, so I stand to be corrected (and probably will be). Regards PAUL JOHNSON
the gunners dream Posted 7 September , 2005 Share Posted 7 September , 2005 Paul, I agree on the RFC stance, but maybe I'm wrong as well. I'll stand with you just in case we both get corrected! Steve
squirrel Posted 7 September , 2005 Share Posted 7 September , 2005 It doesn't look like an RFC "maternity" jacket and there is no badge visible on the cap......which doesn't look quite right for the usual "split ****". It also looks as if he has a lanyard under his collar and down the front of the jacket which is also unusual. Don't have a clue what uniform it is though. the gunners dream Posted 7 September , 2005 Share Posted 7 September , 2005 Hi there, RFC uniforms didn't have insignia on the collar as such: http://www.diggerhistory.info/images/unifo...uniform-afc.jpg http://mpmuseum.org/rcafww1b.html Steve
Paul Johnson Posted 7 September , 2005 Share Posted 7 September , 2005 If not RFC, could it be US Army? Just a thought (please dont kill me!!) PAUL J
the gunners dream Posted 7 September , 2005 Share Posted 7 September , 2005 Paul, I promise not to kill you! I don't think it is US Army and still think it's RFC. See this link for the US Army uniforms in WWI: http://www.quanonline.com/military/militar..._tunic_wwi.html http://www.replicaters.com/ww1usarmy/US%20...rm_tunic-02.jpg Steve

Paul Johnson Posted 7 September , 2005 Share Posted 7 September , 2005 Steve, Just had another look at your RFC link and I'm pretty certain it is RFC. Any RFC experts who can confirm this?? PAUL J
the gunners dream Posted 7 September , 2005 Share Posted 7 September , 2005 Hi there, As I don't have access to my books at the mo, this is the best image I could find of a Poilu: http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/1855325160...733#reader-link I still think he's RFC. delta Posted 7 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 7 September , 2005 I must admit that my first thought was that he would be inthe RFC but was unsure - hence my post. I shall now try to find him on the CWGC website Thanks to all of you for your input - any more would be most welcome
