Chris,

He was born on Jamaica January 1st 1896, his father being the Crown Solicitor for the island.

The family returned to England in 1907 and his education followed at Oundle School and then Balliol College Oxford.

He was commissioned into the 7th Yorkshires in December 1914 and fought with the battalion on the Somme where he was WIA close to Mametz Wood.

Promoted to captain in 1917 he transferred to the 6th Yorkshires when the 7th battalion was disbanded in February of 1918.

Just over a week later he was out with a runner inspecting the front line when he was shot by a sniper in trenches close to Bethune.

He was taken to a Field Ambulance and then on to No 1 Casualty Clearing Station but died of his wounds one after arriving at the CCS.

Bob & Dave,

Many thanks for all this information. Since my first post I found an obiturary in the Times which has some of this detail, additionally he was a nephew of the founders of, and a director of, Pains Fireworks. If you are like me you'll be old enough to remember that name.

Regards,

Chris.
