Mark Hone Posted 3 September , 2005 Share Posted 3 September , 2005 I carried out a recce of the Aubers Ridge battlefield last week. I am focussing on the attack by the Dehra Dun brigade close to the Indian memorial at Port Arthur crossroads. I walked along the Rue De Quesignot to the point where it takes a sharp right-hand turn. At this point there is a prominent drainage ditch. However from the map and the recent Battleground Europe book by Edward Hancock, I was unsure whether this was the drainage ditch in which survivors of the initial Dehra Dun attack sheltered. Hancock implies that the bend is on the German front-line, but this seems rather close to the British trench line to me. Thanks to Will Fergie for his help and providing me with War Diaries, maps etc.
Mark Hone Posted 4 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 4 September , 2005 Here we are at the 'bend in the track'. The ditch is clearly visible behind us. The Indian Memorial and the crossroads are just off shot to the left rear. The beautiful gateway to the Portuguese cemetery can just be seen in the background on the left.
