Hi,

Would anybody be able to tell me anything about my relative Alfred Baker. Here's what I have from CWGC:

Name: BAKER, ALFRED

Initials: A

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment: Somerset Light Infantry

Unit Text: 1st Bn.

Age: 36

Date of Death: 15/04/1918

Service No: 203296

Additional information: Son of John Baker, of Lydlinch, Sturminster Newton, Dorset; husband of Lydia Baker, of 3, Strides Lane, Ringwood, Hants.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 38 and 39.

Cemetery: LOOS MEMORIAL

Any information would be gratefully received. I am also looking for information on his brother Alick (see separate post).

Hi Adam, :)

This is from SDGW,

Born:- King Stag, Lydlich, Dorset.

Enlisted:- Yeovil.

Residence:- East Chinnock, Somerset.

Also that he was Killed In Action.

6 brothers (Wilfred, Ellis, Alfred, Alick, Horace and Cecil) and 2 sisters (Amy and Mary Ann), children of John and Fanny Baker.

Came across your enquiry only last week and I as I was due visit the SLI Office I had look at the 1st Battalion Casualty Book.

This gives the following information

20.06.1916 To France

22.06.1917 Arrived 3 IBD

12.07.1917 Joined 1st Batalion, Somerset Light Infantry

21.09.1917 7 days Field Punishment No2 (No Reason Given)

04.10.1917 Admitted 11 Field Ambulance GSW Face and Left Arm

06.10.1917 To 2nd Canadian General Hospital

25.10.1917 To 3 IBD

30.10.1917 Rejoined Battalion

15.04.1918 Killed in Action

The Somersets were involved in the attack on RIEZ DU VINAGE on 14th and 15th April 1916. I have copies of the Operation Orders and Report taken from the War Diary. If you like I can send them to you as e mail attachments.
