But we can't think of a title - anyone any idea's ????????

Any help much appreciated

Alveley at at War - Shropshire Lads Gone West, or some such...or something to do with Severn? There has to be a suitable Housman quote

(K. goes in search of her copy of A Shropshire Lad)

The working title for my magnum opus (will it ever see the light of day? Doubt it, every new discovery only raises five more questions and other things to research) is 'Faithful Unto Death' (so don't nick it!). I got this straight off the parish memorial. It says more than this of course, but I liked those three words. Anyway, my point is, is there any little message on the Alveley memorial, or one of the men's graves, that sums things up nicely?

All the best,

Andrew

(P.S. I seem to have lost your e-mails of a while ago. There are still a couple of your men I 've not responded about. Can you send a reminder?)

Having struggled with this a couple of times, I now keep a notebook and write down anything I think might be useful in the future - a bit like the person who collects bits of string 'just in case'. Most of it is never any use, of course, but here are a few to help you think! Quite a few come from recognisable sources.

Hearts we leave behind

Fallen dreams

Yesterday's Sons/Yesterday's men

Stars in a Dark Night - [shades of Ivor Gurney]

Paths of summer

The thousand winds

A foreign field

Blue Days and Fair

Above the Downs [or hills or valleys or moors]

......and so on! [only a couple of hundred more in the notebook!]

Regards - Sue

Stars in a dark Night has already been taken - by Michael Hurd for his book on Ivor Gurney.

Shakespeare. The Bible. Various books of quotations. Collections of war poems and war songs. The Long Trail by Brophy and Partridge .........

I'll tell you this, you'll know it when you see it, there will be a great big BONG in your head, and nothing will budge you from it. If you have a moment's doubt, that's not the one.

And good luck from one who has been there, seen that, got the T shirt .......

Lads of the village has already been used by Joy Bratherton - "Where are the lads of the Village tonight"?

But the idea for a quote from the war memorial is a good thought. My own website is named from that idea "We for England Died". The quote on the war memorial is "Live thou for England - We for England died". Anyone know the source of that?

Just had another thought (you can all cheer now  ) - why not a quote from the memorial scroll on SDGW?

Inscriptions from other memorials, possible titles in bold:

Sons of this Place, let this of you besaid,

That your lives are worthy of your dead.

These gave their lives that you who live may reap

A Richer Harvest

ere you fall asleep.

(Shrewsbury)

Their sun went down while it was yet day.

(Talgarth, Brecon)

Not for Themselves

For Justice right they fought

And with their blood

A glorious Freedon bought.

(Peebles)

And by The long road they trod

With so much faith and with such

Devoted self-sacrificing bravery

We have arrived at victory

And today they have their reward.

(Alveston, Warwickshire, written by Sir. D Haig.)

"Sons of this Place" has already gone ... much to my own annoyance I saw a war commemoration book by that title at Bishopsgate Ref library Wednesday.

It might be an idea to look at the reading at the unveiling of the memorial and see if a line is suitable.

" "Lads" who Marched Away."

" They Answered the Call."

or, pinching a bit from Tom's posting...

"...That You Who Live May Reap..."

or, staying with the rural/agricultural theme...

" A Bitter Harvest."

Don't know whereabouts your war memorial is Margaret, but how about "Return to the Village Green" or "The Men on the Village Green."

Hi there,

Many thanks to everyone who wrote a suggestion - they are all brilliant !

One reply said -

"I'll tell you this, you'll know it when you see it, there will be a great big BONG in your head, and nothing will budge you from it"

Well, what's sticking in my mind at the moment is the phrase-

"For King and Country"

Will keep you posted !

Any other suggestions would be warmly welcomed

Kindest Regards

B) Margaret

Margaret,

For King and Country

You might want to bear in mind that there are already a number of books bearing this title. One is a British Legion Publication; another is about the life of George Washington! No, I don't know why either!!

How about

'With Rifle and Bayonet'

'the men of Alverley and the two world wars.' or 'the men of alverley 1914-1946'

'A village at war'

Alverley 1914-1946

the top, one second line as a small sub title

Margaret,

You may find it useful to visit Ray Westlake Books website

http://www.hellfire-corner.demon.co.uk/ray...y-westlake.html

If you scroll down the 'War Memorials etc' section there is a list of local war memorials books, and you will at least get an idea of titles that have been used before.

Certianly I think your title must immediately convey the contents to the general browser of internet buyer, so Alveley and War should be included in the main or sub-title.
