Bombadier Posted 30 August , 2005 Share Posted 30 August , 2005 It today's Daily Mail, there is a letter from a lady (in Answers to Correspondents) who says that her mother's uncle was killed accidentally at a military tattoo held in Accra to celebrate the end of WWI. She gives his name as S Randell but CWGC has it as S Randall. http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/casualty_...casualty=417100 Do any pals have any further information on this incident as it seems rather bizarre? He was in the Buffs by the way. Nigel

Stebie9173 Posted 30 August , 2005 Share Posted 30 August , 2005 DCM in London Gazette 25-8-1917 (Pub 24-8-1917) 9703 C.S.M. S. Randall, E. Kent R. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a hostile raid. He led reinforcements to the front line at a critical moment through intense hostile barrage, and his coolness and personal gallantry in steadying and encouraging the men went very far towards repulsing the enemy's attack. He was of invaluable assistance to his company commander. http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveVi...&selHonourType= London Gazette 18-11-1918 (Pub 15-11-1918) 2nd Lt. S. Randall, E. Michael Posted 1 September , 2005 Share Posted 1 September , 2005 His entry in the Buffs officers medal rolls is for a BWM/VM and it states that he died on 31/12/1918. The Buffs 1914 star roll indicates that he went overseas as a Corporal and was commisioned on 13/8/1917 The East kent Gazette of 29/9/1917 states that he had seen service with the 1st and 2nd Battalions and had been promoted from the ranks (CSM) for service in the field. There is a picture of him in the 1st Battalion memorial book. Can you let me know the details of the letter please, I would like to get in touch with the correspondent. Bombadier Posted 1 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 1 September , 2005 The only address given in the paper is Lisa Haines Canterbury Kent This was in the Daily Mail dated August 30 in the Answers to Corespondents section, not the main letter page. They say that they don't enter into individual correspondance but if you tell them why, they may co-operate. Nigel Nigel
