Does anyone have the numbers of casualties sustained by the Newfoundlanders on the opening day of the Somme please?

Also has anyone ever seen a headstone bearing the inscription "A Newfoundland Officer of the Great War"?

Norm Christie, in "The Newfoundlanders in the Great War 1916-1918" gives approximately the same figures with the additional info that 801 men took part in the attack.

For the most part these men were killed behind their own lines, that happened a lot that day.

And, I have mentioned this before, the caribou in the memorials is a female grieving for her lost young .
