Could any one shed light on the war time history of the 5th service Battalion Royal Irish Regiment? I understand my Grandfather Clifford Gingell served through out the war in this Battalion.

Hello Richard and welcome to the Forum,

The 5th Royal Irish Regiment were the Divisional Pioneers of the 10th (Irish) Division. They served in Gallipoli, Salonika and Palestine before being transferred in April 1918 to the 52nd Division.

If you can get a copy of Orange, Green and Khaki by Tom Johnstone, it gives details of the various actions they were part of.

Hope that helps,

Regards,

Liam.
