Andrew Hesketh Posted 25 August , 2005 Share Posted 25 August , 2005 Rob, Are you familiar with the London Gazette online? If not, it's at: http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveSe...e=0&Referer=WW1 It's got one of the the world's most irritating search engines, but as Rampling is perhaps not too common a name you may be lucky. However you are unlikely to get a citation for an MM, just the date of the gazette. D/S Coy? No idea.

Stebie9173 Posted 25 August , 2005 Share Posted 25 August , 2005 A D/S company was a divisional signal company. It operated telpehone lines (and other signalling devices) between the Divisions Brigades and Divsional HQ. Signallers within the Infantry battalions themselves handled communications between Battalion and Brigade levels. 3 DSC would be attached to 3rd Division. See here for some details. http://www.1914-1918.net/whatfieldcoy.htm Judging by his number he would not have transferred to RE before the latter part of 1917 (or been allocated there if a later recruit). That might narrow down the MM award to a late 1917, through to more probably 1918. Steve.
