KILTY Posted 23 July , 2003 Share Posted 23 July , 2003 Would Boer War campaign medals take precedence over ww1 campaign medals when being worn in a official capacity. For example the following. Kings South Africa 1 Queens South Africa 2 1914 - 1915 Star 3 War Medal 4 Victory Medal 5 Is this the proper sequence?
Muerrisch Posted 23 July , 2003 Share Posted 23 July , 2003 QSA first, KSA next. Count from middle of body. See, for example, Taprell Dorling 'Ribbons and Medals'
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 23 July , 2003 Share Posted 23 July , 2003 2, 1, 3, 4, 5 is the correct sequence. Ian
ttd0 Posted 24 July , 2003 Share Posted 24 July , 2003 Just looked it up in the Medal Yearbook and above posts are correct QSA KSA 14 or 14/15 Star War Medal Victory Medal These groups are fetching quite a high price these days, especially if there is a Long Service Medal in the group. Guest FRANKBARTHOLOMEW Posted 24 July , 2003 Share Posted 24 July , 2003 The correct order of precedence would be (pre-1914): 1. Decorations (e.g. VC, CB, DSO) 2. Coronation and Jubilee Medals (until after WWI) 3. Campaign Medals (in order of campaign concerned) 4. Long Service and Good Conduct Medals 5. Foreign Awards (I think it's decorations first, then campaign medals: e.g. Order of Medijide and then the Khedive's Star, if one had served in Egypt or the Sudan 1882-85). Hope this helps Frank Bartholomew
Muerrisch Posted 24 July , 2003 Share Posted 24 July , 2003 and before some other smarty notices, the CB is not a decoration, but an Order. Got it in the right place, though.
CROONAERT Posted 25 July , 2003 Share Posted 25 July , 2003 Just a point on the order of wear of campaign medals.... if a soldier served in two campaigns (that were "medal awardable") that were both ongoing at the same time, the order of wear is for the campaign that he served in first is the first worn. Eg.its possible for a soldier to have served in NI in,say,1981 and then the Falklands in 1982 - this soldier would wear the CSM (with NI clasp) first, followed by the SAM. Another soldier's first campaign may have been the Falklands in '82, followed by a stint in NI in '83. This soldier, although awarded the same medals would wear them in reverse order. Dave.
