I'm going to the battlefields!

Hi All,

Figured I should post something here as well! I'm going in mid September. I actually have an alternative reason as I'm competing on the Tour of Flanders car rally (in a Mk1 Ford Escort just in case you are interested). However once the rally has finished (17-18th September) I am spending three days with my brother visiting the battlefields (A history graduate with an interest in the subject).

We are staying in Passendale for the rally (which is based in Roeselare) and then we are heading towards the Somme to look up our great uncles four of which fought there and two didn't return.

I'm a bit of a novice at this sort of thing (my own specialist subject is WWII aviation) so any recomended places to see are most welcome

Hi Tom used to rally myself! anyway what part of the somme u going to?, there is masses to see, especially if you get out on foot.

As well as Paul's excellent site, can I recommend Holts Guide to the Somme which includes a number of driving tours of the battlefield. And, if you fancy a leg-stretch, Paul's own book Walking the Somme is highly recommended.

You may, of course, want to visit distinct areas connected with your great uncles and a bit of preliminary research might be helpful to you.
