I don't know if anyone can help, but does anyone by any chance have any details on the background of the above mentioned soldier?

I'm basically trying to find out his age (could be one (or none!) of several listed on the 1901 census) at death, where he lived and for which action he recieved the MM (Gazetted 12th September 1916 - I think it was for Contalmaison, but for some reason am unsure).

Also, does his service record still exist?

I'm asking this as I'm unable to get to Fulwood for the next few weeks and was wondering if anyone had any details in their own research (in other words, don't anybody go out of their way for this as I'll find out the details eventually)

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave

Instinct tells me that this is probably your man, living at St Pauls Terrace, Darwen, an area from which many of the East Lancs were recruited.

His birth is recorded in Q4/1894 in Blackburn district, which of course includes Darwen.

Not 100% certain of course, but it feels like the right one :D

Thanks for that Stephen!

It's a good chance that this is he. I'd taken a look at the online 1901 census (the free bit!) and had come up with 6 or 7 possibles, this man (boy!) being one of them, but there'd been no mention of a middle initial for any of them so I was stuck.

I'll be looking at the local newspaper archives in the next week or so, so (hopefully) should be able to confirm it one way or another.

Thanks again,

Dave.

Just to clarify. The Birth Registration records this boy as being a Thomas Herbert Briggs, rather than plain Thomas or any other middle name.

Steve.

Cheers Steve.

I think it's beginning to seem almost certain that this is the one I'm looking for.

Thanks again,

Dave. :D
