StAubyns Posted 20 August , 2005 Share Posted 20 August , 2005 I have seen this grave on several occaisions but previously did not have a camera with me. What I find striking is this officers religious qualifications - "LLB BA CANTAB" I understand that this means Cambridge University, Batchelor of Law, Batchelor of Arts, is this correct? PhilB Posted 20 August , 2005 Share Posted 20 August , 2005 That`s right, (Actually bachelor - Batchelors make the peas!) but why do you think they`re religious qualifications? I would have thought a law degree just the opposite! Phil B
Kate Wills Posted 20 August , 2005 Share Posted 20 August , 2005 St Aubyns You are right, except that the first line indicates where the family feel he is now, and the second states where he was previously (Cantab = Cambridge) and his legal, rather than religious, qualifications. LLB is the abbreviation of Legum Baccalaureus (bachelor of laws) This is his CWGC entry: Lieutenant DAVID (SONNIE) DEWAR 14th Bn., Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) who died age 24 on 22 March 1918 Son of the Rev. David Dewar, M.A. and Annie Dewar, of 31, Gledhow Gardens, South Kensington, London. LL.B., B.A. (Cantab). Remembered with honour GRAND-SERAUCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY
StAubyns Posted 20 August , 2005 Author Share Posted 20 August , 2005 I plead quilty as charged, however in mitigation - no, I'd better stop digging the hole is deep enough. I stand contrite and shamefaced regards Geoff

StAubyns Posted 20 August , 2005 Author Share Posted 20 August , 2005 Is this is a case of "Like Mother, Like Son" ie the same qualifications. I can only think that I had a senior moment and put "religious" instead of "legal" due to the father being a "Rev" Makes you think of the loss that this country suffered in well qualified young men. byetheway , Dick Flory, I dont understand "was MID". Am I having another senior moment? Regards Geoff

christine liava'a Posted 20 August , 2005 Share Posted 20 August , 2005 Any connection with Fiji? I have an unidentifiable death - Dewar. No army, no date, no first name or initials. Nothing in Fiji records. Possibly someone working for Colonial Office or Sugar company Could this be him?
Stephen Nulty Posted 22 August , 2005 Share Posted 22 August , 2005 Christine I noticed the entry for "Dewar", with no additional information, on your web site. How did you come by a casualty with just a surname?
