uncle bill Posted 20 August , 2005 Share Posted 20 August , 2005 This is another side of the conflict that amazes and interests me. I was lucky to aquire the diaries of a French gendarme, attached to the 47th London Division ( now at IWM) in which he describes life behind the front lines in the Loos sector. On one day he is called on to assist in digging out civilians whose houses had been shelled, about a mile and a half behind the front lines. Does anyone know what dispositions were taken to protect the civilian population and when they were eventually evacuated.
Aurel Sercu Posted 20 August , 2005 Share Posted 20 August , 2005 Though a great deal of civilians had already fled, the ones that had remained behind were evacuated at the time of the German gas attack (22 April 1915). Aurel
