What records are there for POW's

From memory WO161 is the index to POW records at the National Archives, Kew. Not sure if they are on line. The indexes point you to other records that are basically interviews with returning POW's as to their experiences in captivity etc. Not all were interviewed so its pot luck...there is also a database on this site - try the search facility if you can't spot it.

David...

There is an online index to WO161 on this very site. Click the link to The Long Long Trail and then to the Behind the Wire POW database. The work to compile the database was carried out by members of this Forum. The pages also explain what the index contains and how to go about researching a POW.

Hi,

Can anyone help with information about what records are available for POW’s in WW1? Are any online or for sale on CD?

Thanks David

The international Red Cross in Geneva has a massive collection of prisoner information cards. It is not online, and you need to be a relative of the person you are investigating to get anything from them, but their website has a contact. Doc2
