Nathan Greenfield Posted 18 August , 2005 Share Posted 18 August , 2005 Anyone know either the candle power of a Verey light charge (Is this the word?) or how long one stays aloft lighting the ground? Cheers, Nathan
johnreed Posted 18 August , 2005 Share Posted 18 August , 2005 Nathan Very Signal Cartridges are fired from a Very Pistol Calibre 1". Each carteidge contains a single star, the star should ignite and rise to an altitude of 300 fett without breaking up, and should burn brightly for about 9 seconds. This was used for signalling only, I could find no output in lumens/candlepower. Thre colours Red, White and Green John
Nathan Greenfield Posted 18 August , 2005 Author Share Posted 18 August , 2005 Thanks. In order to get enough light to keep up fire against the CND during the attackon Kitchener's Wood, the Germans must have fired quite a few -- if each lasted only 9 seconds. During the Battle of the Atlantic in the 2nd World War, starshell were also used by the Allies. To keep the lookouts and gun layers from night blindness, they wore red glasses. I wonder if the Germans did the same.
