Guest tintin Posted 22 July , 2003 Share Posted 22 July , 2003 I have recently read a very interesting book "The Kaisers Army" from the USA At one point it states the German soldier was issued with two field dressing and some "iron oxide" powder as an antiseptic wound powder. I was rubbish at Chemistry, but seem to remember iron oxide as rust, surely this is wrong? If it's right did it work?
Sue Light Posted 22 July , 2003 Share Posted 22 July , 2003 I was/am definitely rubbish at chemistry as well, but the substance was probably ferric chloride [iron], either as a powder or a tincture, and acted on open wounds by contracting the blood vessels and controlling bleeding. It could also, as a tincture, be taken orally as a 'tonic', but tended to leave teeth a rather beautiful shade of brown! Regards - Sue
