T8HANTS Posted 14 August , 2005 Share Posted 14 August , 2005 Hi All I have just got back home after our annual Service of Rememberance to the Isle of Wight Rifles, 8th Battalion the Hampshire Regiment. Nearly thirty people attended at the Chapel of St. Nicholas in Castro, Carisbrooke Castle - Relatives of the fallen, British Legion Standard Bearers, Royal Hampshire Regimental Comrades, Isle of Wight Rifles living history Society Members, and those of the Gallipoli Association. The 152 names of those who gave their lives was read out, and the Last Post and Reville was exceptionally well played by 12 year old Abigail Cunningham, on only her second public performance. Wreaths were laid by Mr John Watson, relative of Rfn Arthur Watson, and Mr Tony Cripps on behalf of the Royal Hampshire Regiment. The Service was conducted by the Rev Roger Whately. 19 year old Rfn Arther Watson's last letter home contained the following thought. "Please God, I shall come through alright but, if not, you must take it as being for the best. May I come through to see all safe again" Rfn Watson was killed two days later on the Twelfth of August. Jonathan Saunders Posted 14 August , 2005 Share Posted 14 August , 2005 Its pleasing to hear that these men are remembered in such a public way on this special day in the Gallipoli history.
