Your grandfather was in 7th (Meerut) Division, which was part of the Indian Corps, which arrived in France in October 1914. Much of its artillery was, however, supplied from UK, which is why he landed at St Nazaire. In 1914 each division had an ammunition park. This was usually situated close to the divisional railhead and supplied ammunition to the divisional ammunition columns, which took it up to the guns. The Park had mechanical, as opposed to horse transport.
