I have an electronic copy of the complete 5th Royal Irish Lancers war diary 1914 - 1919 including tranch maps (which have been scanned in). This was copied from the PRO. Apparetnly there is another copy with additional entries in the Queens Royal Lancers barracks in Grantham which I am also going to copy at some point. So if anyone has any queries regarding the 5th Lancers then please let me know.

I see that a 14 Star trio is currently on ebay - 6792 Pte.J.Ellers, 5th Lancers. It would be interesting to see if his name appears in the war diary.

Chances of a private soldier's name appearing may be slim, but I found the name of a 1st North. Fusiliers corporal (WIA 17 Sept.,1914) in the unit war diary on this website.

Terry,

Unfortuneately not. There is no mention of him. I did see these medals and as impressive as they were I decided not to buy them. I think they went for aroun £150.

I will be researching his name at the PRO when I get a chance though. Any results I will post them up on here.

I wonder,

Is there anything in the war dairy pertaining to Messines battle 1914 and just generally the period around that time (october- December 1914)

Regards

There's quite a bit actually on this subject. Kemmel is mentioned quite a bit as it Mont de Cats and the fighting for the Monastary as well as Warneton too.

I would appreciate a copy of the War Diary covering the period April 1st -2nd 1918 when the 5th L relieved the units that had taken Rifle Wood. Send as a PM attachment if that's easiest. Many thanks!
