ackimzey Posted 13 August , 2005 Share Posted 13 August , 2005 Help, please. On 26 Aug. 1918, my great uncle writes in his diary: Went to wagon lines in a.m. Very few sick, all full of life and very anxious to beat the Hun. H.Q. moved in p.m. north of Contalmaison. Inf[antry] captured Longueval, Delville(?) wood, also Trones & Beaufoy woods. I've found Contalmaison and Longueval on a map (n.e. of Albert) but the other "woods" are a puzzlement. I may not be reading the diary correctly as to spelling. Any help would be most welcome. I am trying to transcribe as accurately as I can. Y'all have already helped a bunch. Thanks, Ann Kimzey
the gunners dream Posted 13 August , 2005 Share Posted 13 August , 2005 Hello Ann I'd change Beaufoy to Bernafay Wood. Deville can be found to the east of Longueval, Trones and Bernafay are inbetween Montauban to the west and Guillemont to the east. The map below, although not great, will show you where: http://rapidttp.com/milhist/vol072iu.gif If you'd like more detail send me a PM or email and I'll send you some trench map copies. ackimzey Posted 13 August , 2005 Author Share Posted 13 August , 2005 Thanks to both of you. I do have trouble with the spelling. This part of the diary is written with the "purple pencil" and is difficult to read. I have improved in interpretation the more I read. I try to follow Grover's moves on a map and to get the spellings correct. Your helpful posts are appreciated both by me and some other family members who are interested as well.
