Ciaran Byrne Posted 20 July , 2003 Share Posted 20 July , 2003 I am at present copying the war diary for the 5th Royal Irish Lancers and have a couple of questions that I hope some of you may be able to answer. In the monthly reort for arrivals and departures, there is an entry against an officer - Major The Hon K.C. Alexander DSO which states that he was "struck off". Can anyone tell me what this term means and also any information about this major. Thanks in advance
mutley Posted 20 July , 2003 Share Posted 20 July , 2003 I think that to be "Struck off", means that he was struck off strength (SOS), i.e. removed from the established strength of the battalion. A clerical matter which had effects on rationing, pay and the like. A similar phrase was used to bring individuals onto the units books in that they were TOS, taken on strength. Both of these terms are still in use today. Hope this helps.
Ciaran Byrne Posted 20 July , 2003 Author Share Posted 20 July , 2003 Thanks mate. That would make sense as it states the he was sent back to England on 19.09.18 and returned back to the front on 20.10.18.
