PhilB Posted 5 August , 2005 Share Posted 5 August , 2005 The Training Reserve was formed from the 2nd Reserve and Local Reserve battalions which discarded their designations and became numbered battalions of the Training Reserve from 1st to 112th. stiletto_33853 Posted 5 August , 2005 Share Posted 5 August , 2005 Cartoss, The 88th Training Reserve Battalion was part of the 22nd Reserve Brigade. The 88th was made up of the 19th (Reserve) West Yorkshire Regiment. As Phil has pointed out they were numbered 1st to 112th. With the introduction of conscription in January 1916 Regimental Reserve Battalions were unable to cope with the number of recruits. It was decided to form a new organisation to receive and train these recruits. Hence the Training Reserve was formed in September 1916. I hope, along with Phil's posting, this helps a little. cartoss Posted 5 August , 2005 Author Share Posted 5 August , 2005 Thanks for the info. So it looks like this chap was probably a conscript who died in a training accident or due to illness in the UK.
Graham Stewart Posted 5 August , 2005 Share Posted 5 August , 2005 Andy, The 88th Training Reserve Battalion was actually in the 21st Reserve Brigade which on 1/9/1916 was made up of ;- 88th TRB(fmly 19th(Res)Bn,W.Yorks). 89th TRB(fmly 20th(Res)Bn,W.Yorks). 90th TRB(fmly 14th(Res)Bn,E.Yorks). 91st TRB(fmly 15th(Res)Bn,York & Lancs who absorbed 15th(Res)Bn,E.Yorks to form the battalion). The 24th(Res)Bn,Kings Royal Rifle Corps(Yeoman Rifles) which had been formed in Northern Command in May 1916 was also absorbed by the 21st Reserve Brigade, with no individual TRB being formed. Quinns regimental number should actually be TR/5/72901. Which is what makes the Trainging Reserve numbering unique, the '5' standing for No. 5 Regimental District of Northern Command. Graham.
