Chris Noble Posted 1 August , 2005 Share Posted 1 August , 2005 Hi. The rank of Engine Room Artificer. Can anybody explain to me the role/duties that this rank encompassed? Also, how many variations of this rank were there? Regards, Chris.
DirtyDick Posted 1 August , 2005 Share Posted 1 August , 2005 There were, from lowest: ERA 5 - upon entry ERA4-1 (Equiv. rates during WW1 ranging from LS to PO) Chief ERA2 Chief ERA1 Up to Warrant Engineer - or even Lieutenant (E) - if selected. Specialist technical ratings who in practice repaired and helped operate electrics, hydraulics and motors aboard warships. Aboard smaller craft and many submarines a CERA was in charge of the engine room. Richard II
