ianw Posted 17 July , 2003 Share Posted 17 July , 2003 Entering the site, it's sobering to note what was happening on the Somme in 1916 on that particular day . Having been down there on the 1st of July, its easy to return after our jaunt and forget the massive crucifixion of attrition that the Somme became. We will guzzle our Pimms, go on hols, get wet through the Autumn and start to prepare for Christmas and the daily briefs on the Somme will continue on this forum. We will remember them. Chris_Baker Posted 17 July , 2003 Share Posted 17 July , 2003 Absolutely right. Think back to your 1st July trip when it is Bonfire night. Think again next January (Yes, purists I know this is outside the official dates), the anniversary of the final attacks on Munich Trench, in the snow. And remember that every day in between, the armies were engaged on the Somme. Hard to imagine, when you walk over the ground on a sunny day.
