stiletto_33853 Posted 29 July , 2005 Share Posted 29 July , 2005 Wonder if anyone can help me on this one, on some service papers I managed to pull at Kew today there is this abbreviation which escapes me totally. Handwritten is the 85th S.A.A.C. 28th Division R.F.A. Salonika, and officially typed is 85th S.A.S.A.C. 28th Division R.F.A. Does anyone have the faintest idea what they might stand for??? johnreed Posted 29 July , 2005 Share Posted 29 July , 2005 S.A.A.C. could be South African Ammunition Column. John

stiletto_33853 Posted 29 July , 2005 Author Share Posted 29 July , 2005 John, Many thanks for those suggestions, must admit my mind did wander that way too but no mention in his record of South Africa attachment and does specify R.F.A. hence the quandry. Graham Stewart Posted 29 July , 2005 Share Posted 29 July , 2005 Andy, S.A.A.C. if I remember rightly is Small Arms Ammunition Column, which was under the control of the Divisional Train, A.S.C.. I think is was also known as the S.A.A.Sec. or Small Arms Ammunition Section. Whereas the D.A.C. or Divisional Ammuntion Column was under the control of the R.F.A.. There was also a S.B.A.C. which was the Siege Battery Ammunition Column under control of the R.G.A. Graham.
Graham Stewart Posted 29 July , 2005 Share Posted 29 July , 2005 Andy, Have just picked up the Orbat for 28th Div and the unit in question is 85th Bde Small Arms Ammunition Section, Ammunition Column which was attached to the Brigade from May 1916. It appears to be unique to units serving in Salonica as I can't find any in Divisions serving in France & Flanders. Graham.
