Serg. William Gleaden and Pte.William Beardsall

Both William Gleaden and William Beardsall were soldiers with the Sherwood Foresters (unfortunately I don't know which battalion) before transferring to the 6th Leicesters in 1918. According to the CWGC both received the MM. I can find William Beardsall's announcement for January 1918 (when he was with the Sherwood Foresters)in the London Gazette, but not William Gleaden's.

Can anybody confirm that William Gleaden receieved the MM and does anybody have any information as to why they received it?

I have the regimental history for the 1st and 2nd battalions and William Gleaden is not listed as recieveing the MM for either battalion.

(Neither is Beardsall come to that).

The MICs has William Gleadon awarded MM while with the Leicestershire Regiment.

Pte. 306188 William BEARDSALL, 2/8th Bn. (LG 28/01/1918).

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, during the attack at St Julien between 26th and 28th September 1917. When all the Officers and NCO's of the platoon had become casualties, Private Beardsall with splendid initiative took command of his platoon and led them forward to their objective.

I'm not sure if Stuart was going to quote from the same source (Housley's "British Gallantry Awards - The Sherwood Foresters") so I apologise if you were Stuart!

Thanks to all for your help all I ned is the citation for William Gleade(o)n. Steve I think it is defineitely with an "e". Retford Times and CWGC have it with an "e" so it must be right (ha Ha)
