Remembered Today:

6th East Lancashire - Gallipoli Casualty?

I have a group to 7524 Private John Spain, 6th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Spain served at Gallipoli and was at some later date wounded in action and subsequently discharged from the Army on the 13th July 1916. This date is taken from the roll for the Silver War Badge. His service record does not seem to have survived.

Is there any way of determining whether he was wounded in action at Gallipoli, or in one of the later actions in Mesopotamia in which the battalion was involved.

The 6th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment took part in the Attack on the Dujaila Redoubt on the 7th-9th March, the Battles of the Hanna and Fallahiyeh on the 5th-8th April and the Battles of Bait Aisa and Sannaiyat on the 17th-22nd April. These were all part of the unsuccessful attempt to relieve the British garrison at Kut al Amara which was besieged by the Turks.

I would be most grateful for any suggestions.

Regards,

Ron.

If it's of any help.....Whilst looking for same info for someone from 6 South Lancs, also at Gallipoli and then wounded relieving Kut, I found at Kew files on those who received a pension....this gave hopital reports for my man, from which much was gleaned....can't remember file series numbers, but it was related to medal rolls. Someone at Kew should help? Peter.
