niall mallon Posted 26 July , 2005 Share Posted 26 July , 2005 Hello Looking for information on pre 1914 Regiment Relative Gnr 1st N G H Scottish Regiment would like to know what N.G.H stands for, and any info to do with them. Thank you
Graham Stewart Posted 26 July , 2005 Share Posted 26 July , 2005 Niall, Having looked at your post there could be a possible error here as 1st N.G.H. is the 1st Northern General Hospital which was located at Newcastle. There were four other N.G.H.'s all located in Northern Command. They may have meant 1st Scottish General Hospital which was located in Aberdeen. Again there were three other S.G.H.'s;- the 2nd S.G.H. based in Edinburgh, 3rd S.G.H. based in Glasgow and the 4th S.G.H. also based in Glasgow. Graham. Graham Stewart Posted 26 July , 2005 Share Posted 26 July , 2005 Niall, Considering that you mention the relative was a 'gunner', I ran a few checks to see what units could have 'Northen/Scottish' in the regimental title and it would appear the was a North Scottish,R.G.A. formed in 1908 whose H.Q. was located at Broughton Ferry. Graham Stewart Posted 28 July , 2005 Share Posted 28 July , 2005 Niall, North Scottish,R.G.A.(T.F.) was formed 1908 at Broughty Ferry(not Broughton, as I earlier said) as a defended ports unit with three company's. The company's were;- No.1 Coy located at Aberdeen No.2 Coy located at Broughty Ferry. No.3 Coy located at Montrose. It never left the U.K., but may have provided drafts of personnel to other R.G.A.(T.F.) which went overseas. In Army Order 287 of October 1918 the three company's of North Scottish,R.G.A.(T.F.) were absorbed into 22(North Scottish)Fire Command,R.G.A., as part of the Scottish(later Tay) Garrison. Fire Commands,R.G.A. were abolished on 27/1/1921. Graham.
