Hi,

Walter John Rigby was shown as having died in 1915 as a result of an accident whilst serving with the above.

Has anyone any ideas what the Special Service Squadron was?

In 1915 each infantry division had a squadron of cavalry attached to the divisional headquarters called a "Special Service Squadron". They seem to have usually been occupied with tasks such as patroling roads and whatnot behind the front. Perhaps your man was with one of those.

A Special Service Ship is better known as a Q-ship, so I would presume he was attached to a Q-ship when lost.

Best wishes,

Michael

Hello

WALTER J. RIBGY (not Rigby), Temporary Assistant Engineer, RNR, died in Special Service Vessel 3 on 31 May 1915.

Special Service Vessel 3 was Admiralty yacht ENCHANTRESS (1903) who had been laid up at Sheerness in 1914.

I have no details of the accident.
