Bernard,

Can't help on the CWGC but there was a Graves Registration Department working for the BEF during the War.

I have a Photograph of My Uncle's Temporary Cross and directions to the Cemetery sent to the Family after his death but during the War.He died of wounds in 1915 and was not disturbed during the Post-War Cemetery consolidation.

Unfortunately I cannot post a copy on the Site but you are more than welcome to a Photocopy if you e-mail me your contact details(You will notice I live not far from your neck of the woods :D )

As I said earlier I cannot help if your specific enquiry is about the CWGC.

George

The Final Verification Forms were sent out from 1919 onwards. These forms asked for corrections to personal details and for any other info the nok wished to add - also for any Personal Inscription. Initially the 'age' info was regarded as an optional extra if the nok wished to add it but later it began to be added automatically by CWGC.

These forms were not neccessarily tied to the completion of each cemetery as the database was continually being created/updated. When the returned forms for a particular cemetery were deemed as complete as they ever would be, a register was published. However, the forms naturally tended to follow the cemetery completion timetable to a large degree.

During the production process, CWGC again wrote to those who had returned a form with a proof copy of their relative's entry - again asking for corrections. The form also informed them that copies of the register would be available for sale.
