Hambo Posted 24 July , 2005 Share Posted 24 July , 2005 Chris He died of wounds received on the 3rd of May at Monchy. No precise details as to his fate in the regimental history but the loss amongst the officers seems to have become a crisis late in the day. He is listed among the wounded at the end of the limited descripsion of the action. According to the history one of the reasons for the lack of detail surrounding the attack is the fact that casualties were so heavy All the best Hambo

Michael Posted 25 July , 2005 Share Posted 25 July , 2005 As Hambo states, owing to machine gun and sniper fire it was difficult to obtain any information as to how events were proceeding during the day. The war diary is therefore lacking in detail. It does however note that Evans was wounded on the 3rd and later died. He was entitled to a BWM and VM only Mick

But I cannot find anything in the London Gazette. Regards, Chris.
Michael Posted 25 July , 2005 Share Posted 25 July , 2005 Here's his entry in the Buffs officers roll. His original number in the Buffs suggests an early 1917 arrival overseas so he must have been commisioned pretty quickly Mick

Guest wrinklyone Posted 27 July , 2005 Share Posted 27 July , 2005 'Historical Records of the Buffs- East Kent Regiment, 1914-1919' by Col R S H Moody has been reprinted in softback by Naval & Military Press, and contains a couple of pages about the action on 3 May. The Roll of Honour confirms your man's Christian names as Hubert William.
