museumtom Posted 24 July , 2005 Share Posted 24 July , 2005 Hi guys. I have tried every different search but I cannot find the MIC of 733 Gunner Charles Oxtoby Barker, SDGW says he 'died at home' 1/3/1916 and the CWGC says he died 21/2/1916, His number is 733. Any ideas what the matter is? BARKER Initials: C O Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Gunner Regiment: Royal Garrison Artillery Unit Text: West Riding Bde. Date of Death: 21/02/1916 Service No: 733 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: North-East of Church. Cemetery: CLIFFORD (ST. LUKE) CHURCHYARD Regards. Terry_Reeves Posted 24 July , 2005 Share Posted 24 July , 2005 Tom The likelyhood is that he spent his service in the UK and therefore never qualified for a medal. Terry Reeves
museumtom Posted 24 July , 2005 Author Share Posted 24 July , 2005 Thanks Terry, no medal and died during ww1? Is this unusual? Regards. Tom.
Terry_Reeves Posted 24 July , 2005 Share Posted 24 July , 2005 Not that unusual Tom. A couple of possibilities spring to mind: that he was medically unfit for overseas service, or that he was a pre-war Territorial who had not taken the Imperial Service option, which was his right. museumtom Posted 24 July , 2005 Author Share Posted 24 July , 2005 Does this mean that he could be a soldier who died in ww1 and was entitled to a death plaque(?) but not medals? Does this occur often? Regards. Tom
Terry_Reeves Posted 24 July , 2005 Share Posted 24 July , 2005 Tom As far as I am aware, the issue of a commemorative plaque was not conditional upon the award of campaign medals. I can't comment upon the number of occurances I'm afraid. Terry Reeves

Regards. Tom <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Exactly right ,Tom. There were many more Death Plaques issued than medal groupings to the dead. Dave
