christine liava'a Posted 15 July , 2003 Share Posted 15 July , 2003 In 1915 Leonard William Hutchinson left Fiji as a member of the 2nd Fiji Contingent. He enlisted in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, fought, and was eventually sent home on the Port Adelaide, with wife (She may have come from Fiji or they may have married in England) On 3 Feb 1917, the Port Adelaide was torpedoed by U81 180 miles SW of Fastnet, somewhere near Vigo, Spain. The couple survived, and returned to Fiji later, where they were given money to recompense them for the loss of all their possessions. Does anyone know more about this incident? christine liava'a Posted 2 November , 2003 Author Share Posted 2 November , 2003 Bringing this back to the top, since we now seem to have people who know about Uboats and their exploits
Terry_Reeves Posted 2 November , 2003 Share Posted 2 November , 2003 Christine Not much, but The Times reported that four vessels were lost in the same incident; the Port Adelaide, the Hollinsiae, the Eavestone and the sailing vessel Bedford. Another source shows that the Eavestone was sunk by gunfire from the U boat. Terry Reeves
