Does anyone know how specific the location of a downed aircraft is? By this I mean where are the records of the locations of downed aircraft.

In a word yes. The RAF Museum at Hendon should be able to help you with crash sites from WWI.

They hold all the casualty records for pilots killed or wounded in flying accidents etc.

Plus this pdf file might help too.

A lot of it deals with WWII, but there are references to WWI.
