Dear Pals,

I'm looking at the feasibility of visiting Mont de Bligny from Poperinghe in a minibus to visit the site where the Leeds Pals were awarded an en-masse Croix de Guerre for their part in this battle. Could any kind Pal post up a map showing where Mont de Bligny is, and any details of this action? Many thanks

Kerry

Its a long way from Pop to Bligny.Must be about 180 miles.

However it is vitually all motorway down to Reims via the A25,A1 and A26.

When at Reims on the bypass which is really the converging of the A26 and A4 (Paris to Strasbourg motorway),look for the D980 travelling south west which maybe signposted Chateau Thierry. It was the old D road to C.T. before the A4 was constructed and travels somewhat parallel to the A4.

Bligny is about 15 kms down the D980 in beautiful rolling countryside.

Alternatively, after the tolls at Reims, take the A4,signposted Paris and travel down the A4 leaving after about 30kms at Junction No 21 to pick up the D980,taking the direction, signposted Reims.Bligny is about 12kms up the road back towards Reims.

Better still, get a copy of the France Michelin Atlas Routier et Touristique, ISBN 2-06-000268-0 and you should never get lost.

While you are there, make a visit to one of the many champagne houses in the area and stock up.Having said that there are many smaller less known brands which are available at decent prices.

Regards

Frank East

(Just on the point of organising another visit to the area with a base at Fismes.)
