Muerrisch Posted 18 July , 2005 Share Posted 18 July , 2005 I wonder if any Pals have read this: its not really my subject, as I believe it is about mutinies etc, but I have been offered it at a keen price.
Hedley Malloch Posted 18 July , 2005 Share Posted 18 July , 2005 Excellent book - grab it. Then you can read up on the class based nature of the British Army in 1914. Seriously, it is good. It as an avowedly left-wing analysis of the Army and the problems of authority and control it confronted during WW1 due to the mobilisation of a civilian army, many of whom did not really want to be there. It is also a serious piece of academic work, extensively referenced and researched. if you want a collective bottom-up view of what the Army must have looked like to many people in it, then this is for you. Charles Fair Posted 18 July , 2005 Share Posted 18 July , 2005 I would second Hedley's comments - thought provoking, even if you do not agree with all of its conclusions. The authors have done a lot of digging around the forgotten reaches of WO 95 e.g. Base camp war diaries, A&Q diaries at Corps level etc. where few others have been.
