Guest JimmyFinn Posted 14 July , 2005 Share Posted 14 July , 2005 Here's what I know. Would be very grateful for a lookup. Arthur F. Martin Born 1894, Southwark or Lambeth, not sure which. Was living in Massachusetts, USA when he volunteered. Died in the war, always assumed it was Western Front, but don't know for sure. Guest JimmyFinn Posted 14 July , 2005 Share Posted 14 July , 2005 Thank you Andy and Bob. The family story has always been that he went back to England to join British Army to fight in the war. He moved to the US with his mother and siblings around 1910. They were living in Walthamstow before that. If I had to choose between Bob's possibles, I'd say Rifleman Arthur Frederick Martin, because of the more generic London birthplace. Camden Town doesn't fit anything I know about the family. On the other hand, neither does Manchester or Salford. Hmm.
linge Posted 14 July , 2005 Share Posted 14 July , 2005 Jimmy Arthur Francis Martin is the son of Arthur Albert and Ada Maude Martin of Hillcroft Orchard, Farnham Royal, Bucks. So probably not him if his mother and siblings emigrated to USA. I have tried to find if an Arthur Frederick Martin was born in Southwark in about 1894 and then locate the family in 1901. This may be them: 4, Greggs Road, Leyton, Walthamstow Alfred Martin, aged 33 years, Printer Compositor, born Surrey Waterloo Road Elizabeth A D Martin, aged 31 years, born Surrey Blackfiars Arthur F Martin, aged 7 years, born Surrey Blackfriars Alfred G Martin, aged 5 years, Born Surrey Blackfriars Nellie M Martin, aged 3 years, Born Surrey Blackfriars Rose S Martin, aged 11 months, Born Essex Leyton From the births indexes the first three children's births are registered in St Saviours Southwark as follows: 1894 Arthur Frederick Martin 1896 Alfred Garratt Martin 1898 Nellie Marian Martin Their parents married in the June Qtr 1893 in St Saviours Southwark Alfred Martin and Elizabeth Ann D Garratt If the family details tie in with what you know it looks like he was Arthur Frederick Martin. He could therefore be Rifleman Arthur Frederick Martin he died 29th August 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial unfortunately CWGC have no NOK details. Guest JimmyFinn Posted 14 July , 2005 Share Posted 14 July , 2005 That's exactly the fellow Pam. Now that I have a KIA date to work with, I will check local papers from that time. I can't explain Lived=Salford though. Maybe he signed up with a friend who lived there. Many thanks.
Guest JimmyFinn Posted 14 July , 2005 Share Posted 14 July , 2005 Another question if I may: is there a rule of thumb for how long it took for news of the casualty to reach home? Would be closer to weeks, or more like months? Now I will dive into this wonderful web site and learn a thing or two. Thanks everyone for such help. Bob Coulson Posted 15 July , 2005 Share Posted 15 July , 2005 Jimmy, I would say weeks rather than months for news to get to the family. From British Battalions on the Somme, 9th bn Rifle Brigade appear to have been in action around Delville Wood when he was KIA. Bob.
