mordac Posted 12 July , 2003 Share Posted 12 July , 2003 Hi All: The picture below is listed on eBay as a WWI noisemaker; combination horn and rattle, made of tin, and about 12 inches long. Has anyone on the forum seen an item like this? What in heavens name was it's purpose? Thanks. Garth

Tom Morgan Posted 12 July , 2003 Share Posted 12 July , 2003 The only gas alarms I've seen were more like large football rattles. This seems a bit earlier than W1 to me. I wonder if it's a bird-scarer? Tom
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 13 July , 2003 Share Posted 13 July , 2003 Have you asked the Seller? About a year ago some person was selling wooden poles that had been used in a fence claiming they were struts from an SE5a Unbelevably he sold about 4 of them for a ridiculous price! Caviat emptor always. Just one point though, why would you need a noise maker with all the din of shells going off, rifles firing etc Ian
john w. Posted 13 July , 2003 Share Posted 13 July , 2003 Had heard of the rattle and the gas bells, seems they made them out of all sorts of trench debris... shell casings etc... John
Paul Reed Posted 13 July , 2003 Share Posted 13 July , 2003 Looks like something a beater would use to scare pheasants out of the undergrowth... not much of that going on in No Man's Land...
