Guest john Posted 25 November , 2002 Share Posted 25 November , 2002 John Albert COBB, 22 Nov 1871 - 24 Apr 1917, described by family as an Army PT Instructor based at Stamford, Lincs. Died of Cancer in London. Any idea of what unit this might be, or how I can find out more?
jim_davies Posted 26 November , 2002 Share Posted 26 November , 2002 John, You might want to trace of copy of the book "Stamford and the Great War", it is fairly detailed with regard to the town's involvement during the war. The local museum definitely have a copy at Stamford Museum Broad Street Stamford, Lincs, PE9 1PJ I have found them to be very helpful in looking up information in their records, might be worth a try. Not sure but I think Burghley House (or its grounds) were used to train troops early in the war. There is also Stamford Boys School, which may have had a OTC, their chapel displays (or at least used to) some impressive memorials to the school's fallen during the war.
