Terry Posted 8 July , 2005 Share Posted 8 July , 2005 I have picked up a few bargains over the years but the most recent was last weekend, when a family friend dropped off a box of books which included Nicholson's two volume THE GUNNERS OF CANADA, which lists for from US $120.00 to $190.00 on abebooks. They had belonged to her late husband and she thought I might like to have them! PPS: God must live some of the year in Canada as well!

HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 8 July , 2005 Share Posted 8 July , 2005 War Roll of the Cambridgeshire University Press 1921,£1 with three other Non WW1 Books; that all then sold on e Bay & more than recouped the outlay!{leaving me with a Very Free CUP Roll of Honour, A Biggles 1st edition that made £155.00 costing just 10p in the local Car Boot! Fortunately Books are a very poorly understood genre & many bargains are to be found,I love rooting through all those higgledy piggledy boxes! ianw Posted 8 July , 2005 Share Posted 8 July , 2005 Great War books seem to be getting rarer and rarer but a charity shop last weekend yielded up a signed and dedicated first edition of "Look Back in Anger". I think this might merit a place in a specialist auction.

ATM Posted 9 July , 2005 Share Posted 9 July , 2005 My most recent bargain was getting the hardback of Tommy for £5 from one of the Works bookshop. One of those really cheap places that sells off excess stock from the bigger stores. This was while Waterstones nearby was still selling it for £15.99 in harback and £8.99 for the paperback. Although not in your league in terms of savings I was pleased to have gt one over Waterstones. My best of all time is probably when I bought a first edition of "The Man I Knew" by Dougy Haigs wife for £1 off ebay.
Steven Broomfield Posted 9 July , 2005 Share Posted 9 July , 2005 I'm always fond of my 2nd Division History, annotated by an ex-officer in 17Mx, for £9, and a 23rd Div History also for £9...it was 25 years ago, but even so..... More recently, I just like the 3 for 2 at Waterstone's because I can kid myself I've saved money!
Steven Broomfield Posted 9 July , 2005 Share Posted 9 July , 2005 And just remembered - non Great War, but "Tricking the Batsman" by Clarrie Grimmett, free from a jumble sale...."No-one's going to buy that, dear, you take it". Oh, yes, God was in Cambridge that day, Bernard!

Although not in your league in terms of savings I was pleased to have gt one over Waterstones. Asda were selling the paperback for £3.78. Asda is sometimes worth a look for the occasional book. In recent months I picked up "Tommy", "Forgotten Voices of the 2nd World War" and "A War in Words" all for less than a fiver. Useless for the less populist books, of course...
